Rome Notes
Today in Mr. Schick's class, we started the unit on Rome. The three main groups that settled in Italy were Latin's, Etruscan's, and the Greeks. The Latin's were the first people to settle in Italy. The Tiber River was on the peninsula which means that they got clean water, irrigation, and easy transportation. The Romans found a way to divert the water from a river into the Tiber river in order to move the water away from marshy water. This was the biggest public works project if its time. The last king that the Italians had was Tarquin the Proud. They had a democracy but did it their own way. Res Republica means the affairs of the people in Latin which is where the word Republican came from. The people would meet in the agora and vote on important things to do in the city like make new roads or buildings. The people would vote on weather they thought these kind of things were a good idea or not. This is how they made decisions. The Republic was part democracy, monarchy, and aristocracy. Instead of having one king in a monarchy, they would have two consuls. The plebeians were regular common city people like farmers or workers, the patricians were the rich and high people like aristocrats, and than there were the slaves. For my project i am working with Claire Pika and we are thinking about making an apple cake dessert for our project. We are doing this because in Rome, they had cake for dessert but mostly they had fruits. We decided to do the combination dessert.
