- Octavian was later known as Caesar Augustus
- He was the first emperor
- This begins the Pax Romana which was the period of peace and prosperity
- Built roads and aqueducts (brought water to the cities)
- Set up civil service to take care of roads, the grain supply, and postal service
- Then he died at age 76 in A.D. 14, and passes power to Tiberius
- Tiberius was around when Jesus was around and same with Paul
- Jesus was a Roman citizen
- He began his ministry at age 30
- Statements like "My kingdom is not of this world" made the Romans and the Jews nervous and they began to plan his execution
- The governor of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, sentences Jesus to death by crucifixion
