Notes

Today is west civ, we went over some more notes in the chapter.  Here are the notes we took during class:

• Octavian was later known as Caesar Augustus
• He was the first emperor
• This begins the Pax Romana which was the period of peace and prosperity
• Built roads and aqueducts (brought water to the cities)
• Set up civil service to take care of roads, the grain supply, and postal service
• Then he died at age 76 in A.D. 14, and passes power to Tiberius
• Tiberius was around when Jesus was around and same with Paul
• Jesus was a Roman citizen
• He began his ministry at age 30
• Statements like "My kingdom is not of this world" made the Romans and the Jews nervous and they began to plan his execution
• The governor of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, sentences Jesus to death by crucifixion
