Free Mod
Today in class, we did not do anything. Mr. Schick said that he had some stuff to do today in class so he let us do anything. At 130, he let us go to the cafeteria for a free mod. Today was a good Wednesday for me because Fabz wasn't here for gym so our sub let us go to the cafeteria also. Today i had 4 off mods instead of 1 and it was really nice. Tomorrow we don't have class so we will most likely pick up something on Friday to do.

Julius Caesar Notes
Today
in Western Civ, we took some notes as Mr. Schick read important things form the
text book. We learned about Julius
Caesar and his life. He was from an old
patrician family that had come down in the world. He entered the city’s politics as a young man
determined to regain the fame and power of his ancestor’s. In 60 B.C., he began to collaborate with
Pompey, an officer promoted by Sulla who had conquered many eastern
Mediterranean lands. The two allies
formed a triumvirate which is an alliance of three politicians that enabled
them to control the Republic’s decision making.
Caesar won an appointment as proconsul of a province that included the
southern regions of Gaul. Caesar conquered
Gaul and even made forays into Britain and Germany. Meanwhile in Rome’s eastern frontier, Crassus
had led an army to crushing defeat by the neighboring empire of Parthia while
Pompey had stayed in Rome growing jealous of Caesar’s success. Pompey was later defeated by Caesar in Greece
and murdered in Egypt, where he has taken refuge. Caesar returned to Rome in triumph in 46 B.C.
The Senate hailed him, however reluctantly, as the Father of the Fatherland. The Senate now enlarged by his own appointees,
paid him noble compliments and its members vowed to risk death in defense of
his person. Caesar showed respect to the
Senate but treated it as a mere advisory body.

Project Presentations
Today in West Civ, we continued to present the projects. Alyssa and Natalie went first and they presented a power point on their project. what they did was the constructed some sculptures out of clay and they were really cool. One was a horse with a chariate and the other was a man. I don't know who the man was but it was really well done. The next person that went was Maria and she made a power point and some food. I thought that her project was really well done and she gave a lot of good facts about her food but i was a little iffy with her food. She made some cheese cake and I thought it was ok but it wasn't sweet like the cheese cake I like is. I thought it was cool though how she made it and it looks cool because it had bay leaves in it and I didn't know that those were edible.

Project Presentations
Today me and Claire presented our project and I think that we did really well. We presented our power point and everything was going fine until he pointed out that we used a blender to mix something together. I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not but I was kind of hard not to make it without the mixer bowl. Any ways I think that everyone liked the cake with the apples because everyone wanted some and we didn't have anything left over. I think that we did really well on the project and I hope Mr. Schick thinks so also.

Project Presentations
Today in West Civ, some people presented their projects for Ancient Rome. Caroline and Hanna's project was really really good and I enjoyed it a lot. Their food was really good and they brought in some fruit to go with it. The first person to go was Austin and he built a Colosseum. His model was really good but his facts and everything else wasn't that great. Hanah also went and she made honey cookies with sesame seeds on top. They were really good also and her facts and everything else were really well put together. We had to grade everybody as they went and the lowest grade I gave someone was an 80 which I think is still pretty good. Everyone did well and I enjoyed all the projects that went today. I'm excited to present tomorrow also with my partner Claire. I hope everyone likes our sponge cake with cinnamon apples.

Today in Western Civ, we took the test on Rome. I thought it was so easy and I thought i did well but i got a 72. I only got 7 questions wrong but since there were only 25 questions it was a low grade. I now have a 79 in the class but me and Claire are presenting our project after the break and hopefully we will get a good grade so I can get it up to an 80 something again. He never told us what our next section is that we are going to be studying but I am glad that we are moving on to a new section. Hopefully Claire and I will get a good grade on our project so I can get my 79 back up to an 80.

Today in Western Civ, we went over some notes again for the test on Friday. He basically just reviewed everything like he did yesterday and than for the rest of the class we got together with our partners for the project. Me and Claire were going to do a Roman Apple cake for our project but I don't know if that is actually what they ate in Ancient Rome. We are thinking about making bread now because they made a lot of bread and had it with every meal. We also are going to bring in some fruit with it because they also ate a lot of fruit with every meal. Hopefully we will do well on this project.

Test on Friday
Today in western Civ, we reviewed for the test on Friday. The test is on Rome and I think that I am ready but I still haven't studied a lot. I am going to look over all of my notes tomorrow and Thursday night so that I am hopefully ready for the test on Friday. I know most of the stuff that he went over today in class but I definitely need to re read over my notes just to be sure. He mostly talked about all the governments that Rome had and all the changes that they had in it. I know that pretty well so I think i am ready for the test.

Rome Notes
Today in Western Civ, we answered some questions on a worksheet.
Here are the answers to the questions:
1. How did geography affect the
development of Rome? The Latin people that first settled in Rome settled by a
river in the center of Italy. It was a good location for them to control
Italy and it also put them in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea which is a
place that had fertile soil and it gives them water and it was in the middle of everything.
2. How did the Etruscans influence
the development of Rome? The Etruscan king ruled over Rome by 600 B.C.
which made Rome grow as a wealthy and large city.
3. Which are the main groups that competed
for power in the early Roman republic? The two groups that competed for
the power in the early republic were the nobles and the common people.
4. What is the significance of the Twelve Tables in Roman law? The
Twelve Tables said that all free citizens were protected by law and they were
posted in a public place for everyone to see.
5. How did Rome regain control of Italy after the sacking of the
city by the Gauls? Rome eventually defeated them. The Gauls were french that lived in the city Gaul.
Notes on the Punic War:
- · All of Rome’s success brought them into collision with a rival city state beyond the sea called Carthage.
- · Carthage became an oligarchic and empire-building republic similar to Rome.
- · They were interested in Sicily that was between Africa and Italy that caused them to conflict with the Romans.
- · The Punic Wars were waged on land and sea in three vicious rounds between 264 and 146 B.C.
- · In the first phase, Rome was able to force Carthage out of Sicily, but the North African city kept the rest of it empire.
- · In the second phase, Carthage’s general Hannibal invaded Italy, defeated several Roman armies, and brought Rome to defeat.
- · Roman allies were able to get citizens and allied soldiers from all or Italy, while Carthage relied on smaller mercenary armies
- · This enabled Rome to Triumph.
- · Eventually, Rome provoked a third war, and in 146 B.C., Carthage was captured after bitter fighting.
- · The Senate ordered the city to be leveled, its people sold into slavery, and even the ground on which it had stood to be solemnly cursed.

Today in western civ, Mr. Schick read from the text
book. He explained a lot of key points
as we read and told us the important things to underline. Some things that he told us were important were
that the Latin’s were the first to settle in Rome and the Etruscans
settled. Another thing was that the
Romans borrowed directly from the Greeks.
The Latin’s also learned the alphabet and gained knowledge from the
Greek city-states. The roman government consisted
of a king who was advised by the council of elders called the Senate. They usually chose among the patricians who
were men with fathers who already belonged to this heredity group of leading
families. Around 500 B.C., Rome over
threw its Etruscan rulers, and the monarchy was abolished. They developed a system called a Roman
Republic which was a government that was neither a Greek style democracy nor an
oligarchy, but a mixture of both.

Rome Notes
Today in Mr. Schick's class, we started the unit on Rome. The three main groups that settled in Italy were Latin's, Etruscan's, and the Greeks. The Latin's were the first people to settle in Italy. The Tiber River was on the peninsula which means that they got clean water, irrigation, and easy transportation. The Romans found a way to divert the water from a river into the Tiber river in order to move the water away from marshy water. This was the biggest public works project if its time. The last king that the Italians had was Tarquin the Proud. They had a democracy but did it their own way. Res Republica means the affairs of the people in Latin which is where the word Republican came from. The people would meet in the agora and vote on important things to do in the city like make new roads or buildings. The people would vote on weather they thought these kind of things were a good idea or not. This is how they made decisions. The Republic was part democracy, monarchy, and aristocracy. Instead of having one king in a monarchy, they would have two consuls. The plebeians were regular common city people like farmers or workers, the patricians were the rich and high people like aristocrats, and than there were the slaves. For my project i am working with Claire Pika and we are thinking about making an apple cake dessert for our project. We are doing this because in Rome, they had cake for dessert but mostly they had fruits. We decided to do the combination dessert.

New Project
Today in West Civ, Mr. Schick told us about a new project that we have to start working on this week. We only have 10 days left of school until spring break and it is due after words. I really want to get it done before spring break though so I don's have to do any work over the break. My partner is Claire who I worked with for the last project. I think that we work well together. Our plan is to make some ancient Rome desserts for everybody because the Romans loved desserts. They usually ate fruit so we are thinking about making an apple cake that they made. They didn't use sugar in the cakes they used honey so we are going to replace have of the sugar used in the cake with honey. I think that it is going to be delicious. One other thing that we have to do is write a paper explaining why we made this food and why it was important to Rome.
