Roman Family Summary

The Roman’s family lives were common to all ancient city states.  The community’s survival and prosperity depended on a god or goddess who was thought to take a particular to take a particular interest in its destiny.  The Romans came to see some of these gods and goddesses as wielding worldwide power, though foreigners might worship them under different names and tell different stories about them.  The responsibility for maintaining the peace of the gods belonged to the pontiffs, a group of priests headed by the supreme pontiff, who were leading magistrates of the Republic.  The Romans shared other values specifically with Greek city states.  These values included the belief that it was the right and duty of the men of the community to fight its wars, and also to share in its government.  The men took it for granted that the women of Rome had no right or duty to share in politics and government.  The women needed guardians for all legal transactions.  Many stories were told of the simple country life that such men led, and of their contempt for self-seeking.  Instead of devoting his life directly to the city state as in Sparta, a Roman man belonged first of all to a family and a clan.  Clans and families were held together by fathers, particularly by men who had the status of paterfamilias or family father.  The paterfamilias had unlimited power, including the power of life and death, over the whole household.  The also had power over all sons and daughters who left his household upon marriage.  The Romans revered power of fatherhood not only in family life but also in the community life of their city state.  One of the Republic’s most important deities was Vesta, the goddess of hearth and home.  In every household, the fire in the hearth was scared to Vesta and was only put out if the family moved.  Motherhood was also respected in Rome.  A married women bore to the name of matron which was a title of honor that meant lady mother.  She was supposed to live in subordination to her husband, but through strength of personality and authority with her man, she was also expected to contribute to the community as well as the family.  Women were also expected to help make sure that men had the qualities they needed to keep the Republic strong.

Greece Chapter Test

Today in Western Civ, we took our Greece chapter test.  Mr. Schick let us use our blogs which was very helpful.  I'm almost positive that I got the first three pages all right but the last two were kind of hard.  I knew the people but I forgot most of them when it came to the questions.  I like this style of test better because t had a word bank that was really helpful.  I know for sure that I mixed up the Ionian Sea and Aegean Sea.  I had them right the first time but than I changed them at the last second.  I don't know why I did though.  Hopefully I didn't mix up too many names and still got a good grade.  I don't want to start the fourth quarter off with a bad grade because it will be really hard to get back up in this class.  The test took about the whole class period for me because it was set up like a paragraph.  All we had to do was fill in the blanks as we went along with a word bank.  It was kind of easy but again I hope that i still get a  good grade even though i mixed up a lot of stuff.

Studying for the test (Part 2)

Today in west civ, we went over all that we need to know for the test tomorrow.  I don't know if I am going to do well or not on this test because I have studied but I think that I am missing some information.  I think that we have been on this topic for a while now and I am really happy that we are finally moving on after tomorrow.  Hopefully I can do well on the text tomorrow and he said that there are no essay questions on it so maybe I will do better without those.

Studying for the Test

Today in West Civ, we went over the "58-Point" Greece video handout.  I think that if i make flash cards or a quizlet I will be prepared for the test on Wednesday.  We are supposed to get snow Tuesday night and hopefully we will have a delay or school on Wednesday because I want to start a new section in this chapter.  I also do not want another cyber day because they are absolutely awful.  I am hoping that i will start of quarter four for west civ with a good grade but if not I can get it up somehow.

Cyber Day Review

Today in West Civ, we got together in groups by our rows and went over the answers that we got on our cyber day homework.  It turned out that it wasn't graded.  It was just an assignment for us to get an idea of what the test is going to be on.  I got a few wrong on it so I'm glad it wasn't graded.  After we checked that assignment we moved onto the worksheet that we did last week about the Ancient Greece video.  We checked over it for a little bit and than Mr. Schick told us that we had to know all of the Greek war hero's and authors names and what they did for the test.  Now I am feeling a little off about the test.  I just have to study really hard and hopefully I will do well.

Another Sub

Today in West Civ, Mr. Schick was here for a few minutes to explain what were doing and than he had to leave.  Mr. Del Puppo was our sub.  Mr. Schick told us to review the "58 point quiz" paper that we did in class last week about the video that we watched.  We also had to make sure that we were done with our cyber day homework from yesterday.  Since i am done both of those things I just looked over my cyber day assignment to make sure I got them all right because I need an A.  I didn't have my book with me so I just looked up the questions that I didn't know if they were right or not.  Hopefully I did well and got an A.

Mr. Schick is Sick Again

Today in west civ, we had a sub.  Our sub was Mr. Teter who is the other west civ teacher.  he used to be my human geo teacher last year too.  Mr. Schick is still sick so that is why he wasn't in class.  All that we did today was watch the second half of the Greece video.  It was kind of like the first half.  We couldn't get the computers to work when we hooked it up to the big screen so we had to watch it on our own.  Not a lot of people had head phones so we all just broke up into small groups and watched it together.  We started to watch some of it in our group but than we just started talking instead.  By then, everyone was kind of talking because we were all done the worksheet.  On Monday in class I'm Mr. Schick will be back and we will watch the video in class.  He will probably ask us if we finished it and not a lot of people did so I think we will watch it again.  Hopefully this section is almost over because it has taken a while to go through it.

Finishing Up Projects

Today in west civ, some more people presented their projects.  I thought that their projects were really good and were really self explanatory.  The videos were really good and showed alot of information through the pictures and text.  One video even had some narration which was cool.  This other girl did a video that was made out of a bunch of pictures and paper.  She would draw on the paper and would make illusions with her hands as they changed.  There were alot of other creative videos like those but in different ways.  Some of them looked like they were done the night before but were still good.  I think that everyone did a really good job and they were all very creative and fun to watch.

Presenting Projects

Today in West Civ, we presented our projects.  Claire and I went first and I think that we did pretty well.  Mr. Schick seemed like he liked it alot.  He showed our video on the screen and than Claire and I had to go up and explain the video.  We did this by using our story boards that we had to fill out and make as a part of the project.  I think that it went really well.  Other people presented their projects and they were really good to.  I liked Hanna's project because at the end, she had the clip from the Sparta movie that says "This is Sparta!"  It was funny.  Some other videos were really well put together and had really cool effects but weren't accurate.  Some others had alot of information on them and were really informational.  There are still alot of groups that have to go and it will probably take up most of the class tomorrow.  I think that we did really good on our project and hopefully we got a good grade on it.

Ancient Athens and Sparta Projects

Today in Mr. Schick's class, we worked on our video project for Athens.  My partner and I are done our project so we didn't really do much.  Since Mr. Schick is sick, he wasn't in class today so we had a sub.  It was kind of a boring class since me and my partner are done our projects because we kind of just sat there and did nothing.  I already finished my worksheet from last week so I cant work on that either.  Hopefully me and Claire's video is good enough for what Mr. Schick is looking for.  I think that we did a really good job putting it together and it sounds really good with the music.  We also put alot of information on our story boards so that it shows alot about our video and what we are trying to talk about.  The story boards took awhile to do but it was fun drawing.  They were kind of easy to do also because we already had our video made before we started them so we just got information from that.  I am looking forward to watching everyone's video or project tomorrow and hopefully me and Claire did ours right and we get a good grade on it.

Friday, March 7, 2014

Today in West Civ, Mr. Schick was not here so we had a sub.  All we did was finish doing the work sheet based on that video we have been watching.  I didn't have any headphones so I couldn't watch the video.  Class was kind of boring because after I looked up the answers and finished the worksheet I had nothing else to do.  Our sub let us talk a little towards the end of class so it wasn't to bad.  The worksheet was kind of hard because you really had to think of the answers.  Some were really hard to find and others were easy to do without looking them up.  I don't know if I am going to be able to memorize all of those names and all f the people.  There was alot of them and alot to remember about what they do.  I hope that when the test comes up I will be prepared for it and get a good grade.

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Today in West Civ, we watched more of the video about Ancient Greece.  We didn't really get that far even though we watched it for most of the class.  We are only about 7 minutes into it and I only have a few questions answered on the study guide but hopefully we will finish it by next week.

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Today in West Civ, Mr. Schick talked more about our projects that are now due on Monday.  He gave us this study guide and we have to answer the questions based on a video we will be watching.  The video is about 45 minutes long and Mr. Schick said that it will take a couple classes to finish watching it.  Hopefully I will do better on this test than I did on the last test.

Today, we did not have west civ because we did not have school.  Since we don't have school, we have to do cyber day.  My assignment for this class is to just keep working on my commercial.  Hopefully we have school tomorrow because I don't like cyber days.

Saturday, March 1, 2014

Today in West Civ, Mr. Schick told us about a new project we will we working on.  The project is to make a commercial or ancient Sparta or Athens.  We get to work with a partner and my partner is Claire.  Hopefully we will get the assignment done and get a good grade on it!
